Steve Mayles (born 9 February 1974 in Coalville, Leicestershire, England),[1] is a British video game artist currently working for video game company Playtonic Games as Character Art Director. He first started his career working at Rare from 1992–2014[2][3] and has worked on numerous Rare titles, such as the Battletoads series, Donkey Kong Country series and Banjo-Kazooie series. He is currently working on the upcoming game Yooka-Laylee.[4]

Mayles is known as the ‘father’ for a wide array of characters which he has designed throughout his career, specifically featuring googly eyes – the entire Kong Family, except Donkey Kong himself, the Kremlings, most notably King K. Rool – for Donkey Kong Country, and later given the moniker “Kaptain” K. Rool for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Banjo and Kazooie, as well as every other character, featured in both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. He will also be designing most of the characters, including the protagonists for Yooka-Laylee.[5]

His older brother is video game designer Gregg Mayles, who works as Creative Director at Rare, and has worked for the company since 1989.
