Chev Chelios is a fictional character and the protagonist of the film Crank and its sequel, Crank: High Voltage. He is portrayed by Jason Statham.

Biography[]

Chev Chelios was born in London and lived with his mother, Karen Chelios. As a child, he was very violent towards other people and committed crimes including stealing a car, robbing a store and getting into fights in school; he was also addicted to video games. He never met his father, who according to Chelios, died before he was born. As a child, he appeared on The Luke Cunard Show, a fictional British talk show, because of his violent tendencies. In his adult life, Chelios moved to Los Angeles, California where he started working as a professional contract killer (hitman) and also met with several people including Eve Lydon (Chelios's girlfriend), Kaylo (Chelios's street contact), Carlito (the powerful boss of the Mexican-American West Coast Crime Syndicate, as well as Chelios's employer), Orlando (an African-American drug dealer), and Ricky Verona (a small-time criminal and long-time rival and enemy of Chelios).

Crank[]

Chev Chelios is a Los Angeles-based professional hitman working for the West Coast Crime Syndicate, headed by crime lord Carlito. Chev's girlfriend Eve does not know what Chev does and Chev is planning to quit the crime syndicate so he can spend more time with her. He is contracted for his last hit - killing Don Kim and apparently carries it out. On November 7, 2005, Chev learns he has been injected with a poison called "The Beijing Cocktail" by his rival Ricky Verona, which will kill him if his heart rate drops. Trying to stay alive and seeking help from friends Kaylo and Doc Miles, Chev needs to keep his heart pumping through adrenaline rushes. Chev sets out to find answers as well as protecting Eve, and get his revenge on those who have betrayed him before the poison kills him. Towards the end of the film, Chelios arranges a meeting with Verona at a downtown hotel and after he arrives, Chelios comes face-to-face with Carlito, who is revealed to have made a deal with Verona - Verona would kill Chelios so that the Chinese mafia doesn't retaliate because of the Don Kim hit and then Verona takes Chelios's place as Carlito's new hired gun. Before Carlito can kill Chelios, Don Kim and his men arrive and kill all of Carlito's bodyguards. Carlito himself is betrayed and killed by Verona, who flees on Carlito's helicopter but Chev follows him. Chev fights Verona out of the helicopter and as both of them are falling from the helicopter in the sky, Chev snaps Verona's neck, killing him. As Chev is falling from the sky, he phones his girlfriend, Eve, saying that he won't be coming back ever again. He hangs up and closes his eyes waiting to die. Chev then drops on to a car then bounces on to the road. His nostrils flare, he blinks, and one heartbeat is clearly heard before the screen cuts to the ending credits.

Crank: High Voltage[]

Picking up immediately after he hits the ground at the end of Crank, Chev is kidnapped by a gang of Chinese medics. Three months later in February 2006, while on an operating table, they attempt to harvest his organs. But after they remove his heart and replace it with an electronic temporary one, Chev wakes up before they attempt to take his genitals and he kills the medics. He then has to chase after the gang who has stolen his heart. At the same time, he must keep shocking himself with regular jolts of electricity to keep himself alive. In the film's climax, he eventually gains so much electrical discharge that he catches fire and once again apparently dies. However, the credits reveal his survival.

While in Crank, Chelios' survival is described as a consequence of his consumption of epinephrine and his attempts to counteract the "Beijing Cocktail" with an increased adrenaline flow, in High Voltage Chelios is described possessing a bona fide near superhuman physique, this explaining the choice to harvest his organs in the first place. Not only Chelios' enhanced physique allows him to survive his self-immolation, but his transplanted heart briefly gives Poon Dong, the Triad boss requesting Chelios' heart, juvenile vitality and stamina, despite his elderly frame.

In Crank: High Voltage, Billy Unger portrays a young Chev Chelios.
